Birmingham CrossCity CCG wins HSJ value in healthcare award

HSJ AWARDS WINNERSNHS Birmingham CrossCity Clinical Commissioning Group has won the Value and improvement in the use of information technology to drive value in non-clinical support services category at the 2016 Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value in Healthcare Awards.

The awards, which took place on 24 May in Manchester, recognise and reward outstanding efficiency and improvement by the NHS. Finalists demonstrated that they are striving to improve value and efficiency in healthcare and have been judged to be leading the way in this increasingly important area. The judges said they were impressed with the scale of this project, noting it was hugely ambitious and compatible with new models of care.

Birmingham CrossCity picked up its award for an innovative £4.5 million project – Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) – which aims to improve patient care by allowing doctors and nurses in GP practices in Birmingham to access their computer desktop securely from anywhere, and on any mobile device with an internet connection, such as smartphone, laptop or tablet.

It is piloting the project at several GP practices in 2016 before rolling VDI out to its 100 GP practices. It is working on the project with its delivery partner Midlands and Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit (MLCSU).

Dr Masood Nazir, NHS Birmingham CrossCity CCG’s Information Lead and a Hall Green GP, said: “I am delighted and honoured that we have won this prestigious award. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is going to make a real difference to our patients here in Birmingham, allowing GPs to work in a far more flexible manner, be that in a patient’s home, nursing home or another practice.

“VDI will ensure GPs are not tied to their practice, and that they can access patient notes safely and securely from anywhere with an internet connection, providing a better service to all our patients.”

John Uttley, head of the E-Innovation team at Midlands and Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit, added: “We’re delighted to be recognised with Birmingham CrossCity CCG at the HSJ Value awards. It’s an excellent example of what can be achieved through partnership working between a Commissioning Support Unit and a CCG.

“The solution saves the CCG hundreds of thousands of pounds a year and it supports the Five Year Forward View’s new models of care by making it easier to run large GP partnerships.

“Most important of all, it also leads to better patient care because the doctor can access records anywhere and updated them instantly and securely.

“The system can be adapted to different areas and sizes of CCG and we are already working with a number of organisations who wish to see the same benefits as Birmingham CrossCity.”
