GP out-of-hours services have received high numbers of calls over the Christmas period which can lead to some people having to wait far longer than normal to speak to a doctor.
Many calls are from people who want repeat prescriptions – something they could have anticipated before the holiday, or alternatively had dealt with by a community pharmacy.
GP surgeries and community pharmacies are open as normal on Dec 30 and Dec 31, with some pharmacies open on New Year's Day.
In emergencies, pharmacies do have discretion to issue some medicines without a GP's signature if a patient has a repeat prescription slip.
You can also use pharmacies to stock up on over-the-counter remedies from seasonal colds and flu.
