Your Care Connected set to pilot in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull

GPs and NHS Trusts in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull have joined together to bring better and safer care for local patients through Your Care Connected.

Your Care Connected is a new electronic system that allows doctors and nurses outside of the GP Practices in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull to look up and view relevant information from patients' GP records (once the patient has given their explicit consent), in order to make care better, safer and quicker.

Eight GP Practices and four NHS Trusts in the area are taking part in an initial pilot for Your Care Connected. This will start in January 2015 - patients registered with those GP Practices will have received a direct mail information pack, which includes an opt-out form, from 24th of November 2014.

Information such as a summary of patients medical history, medication, test results and allergies can be viewed through a simple look up and view system which allows doctors involved in a patient's care to see the information whilst the patient is with them. As stated previously, doctors must get the patient's permission to view their records.

By allowing doctors outside of the GP Practices to view GP records, patients could receive safer and quicker treatment and won't have to remember and repeat information to every doctor caring for them.

Gavin Ralston, Birmingham Cross-City's Clinical Commissioning Group Chairman, said: "Doctors in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull have embarked upon this significant new programme with real enthusiasm. We believe it has the potential to further improve safety and quality, by allowing this important information to be accessible at a sometimes critical point of patient care.

"Allowing doctors to be able to look up and view relevant patient information from the GP record without having to store patient data is a big step forward. This is all about treating our patients in a better and safer manner, and ultimately that's much better for patients and for clinicians."
